RIP Gene Franklin

Chaplain 'a well-loved man'

The Sumter Fire Department is reeling from the loss of a beloved chaplain who was killed Tuesday afternoon in Dalzell when the motorcycle he was riding was struck by a car on Black River Road.

The Rev. William Eugene "Gene" Franklin, 64, died about 3:35 p.m. Tuesday after being air-lifted to Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, said Sumter County Coroner Verna Moore on Wednesday. She said Franklin died from trauma to the head.
